Bill & The Factor
About Bill O'Reilly
Bill O'Reilly heads arguably the best known, most written about, and most discussed cable news program around. "The O'Reilly Factor" on the Fox News Channel is certainly the most watched; it has been #1 in the ratings for more than 280 weeks, and is also seen in more than 30 countries.

During its 11 years on the air, "The O'Reilly Factor" has developed a unique blend of news analysis and investigative reporting, and the No Spin Zone is sought out and appreciated by millions of people every weeknight. More than five years ago, "The Radio Factor" also took to the air. For two hours each weekday, involved folks, listening now on more than 400 stations, call in to participate in timely debates, and the show has become one of the most successful radio franchises in the nation.

Bill O'Reilly writes, too. His nationally syndicated column appears in print across the nation. Every week the column is made available in advance of publication at BillOReilly.com, and through the website's newsletter. In addition, O'Reilly's last four adult non-fiction books have perched atop The New York Times bestseller list, and his "O'Reilly Factor for Kids" was the best selling children's non-fiction book in 2005.

O'Reilly started his on-air career in Scranton, Pennsylvania and then moved on to local reporting and anchoring stints in other cities including Dallas, Boston and New York. He took on network reporting responsibilities with CBS and ABC News and then was named host of the first version of the nationally syndicated "Inside Edition." He arrived at Fox News in 1996. Along the way, he's won many journalism awards, including 2 Emmys.

Bill O'Reilly was born in Manhattan, and raised on Long Island. His Bachelor's Degree is in History from Marist College, and he has a Master's in Broadcast Journalism from Boston University and another Master's Degree in Public Administration from Harvard's Kennedy School of Government.

In his spare time, Bill O'Reilly used to say he "took naps." That was back when he had any spare time.

About the O'Reilly Factor
The program is done "live to tape", meaning that unlike other Fox News Channel programs at night, The O'Reilly Factor is prerecorded. The program is live for breaking news or special events. The show usually tapes between 5 and 7pm EST.

The O'Reilly Factor is divided into titled segments, appearing in the following general order:

  • Talking Points Memo: Bill O'Reilly's commentary on a current event or the state of the country.
  • Top Story: Bill O'Reilly covers one of the most important stories of the day, with interviews with newsmakers, noted analysts, or Fox News Channel reporters.
  • Impact: Bill O'Reilly focuses on issues of crime and the law in this segment. Updates on criminal investigations, trials, and lawsuits are highlighted. Other times, issues relating to government relations and agencies are featured, as are stories about the Iraq War.
  • Unresolved Problem: Bill O'Reilly focuses on an issue which he feels is not sufficiently covered by other media.
  • Personal Story: Bill O'Reilly invites an author of a best selling book, a newsmaker thrust into the spotlight, someone who has experienced an event currently in the news, or someone who has interviewed a newsmaker. The goal of this segment is to have the guest relate his personal experiences about the topic.
  • Factor Follow-Up: Bill O'Reilly revisits an issue discussed in a previous edition of the Factor.
  • Back of the Book: Various topics will be placed in this segment, which is one of the last segments (hence the name).
  • The Most Ridiculous Item of the Day: a brief segment highlighting something O'Reilly finds absurd, or in some cases, the direct opposite.
  • Factor Mail: Bill O'Reilly reads brief snippets of electronic mail sent to him. He frequently puts together letters that have opposite viewpoints on a particular segment.
Occasionally, the following segments appear:
  • Children at Risk: Bill O'Reilly covers issues relating to the health and well-being of children and adolescents.
  • Factor Investigation: Bill O'Reilly invites guests who have investigated a person or organization that O'Reilly dislikes.
  • Fridays with Geraldo: Geraldo Rivera, of the Fox News-produced and syndicated Geraldo At Large, discusses a topic of interest to O'Reilly.
  • Bloviating with Bill: A regular viewer gets a chance to debate O'Reilly.
  • Policing the ...: A segment where O'Reilly reviews several sources for normally outlandish content. the "the" in the name is usually followed up by "net" (Internet), or Media.
